Eilean Rìgh 1987

I visited the small island of Eilean Righ in 1987, which lies at the eastern end of Loch Craignish, just off the Sound of Jura on the Argyll coast in Scotland. At that time there were no full time residents, excepting some sheep, no mains electricity and the water came from an unreliable well. It is a historic island, being named the Isle of Kings, and contains the remains of two stone age forts. However little is known of the history until the 1930s, when it became the retirement home of Sir Reginald Johnston, who was the Tutor of Pu Yi, the last Chinese Emperor.

The island was seriously refurbished in the early years of this century with mains electricity, a new well and of course a helicopter hanger. Still I am sure it retains the rugged beauty which so entranced me and inspired the photographs in this gallery. Thanks to Magda and Steve, my hosts.

All photographs taken on a Rolleiflex T Model 1 c.1960 medium format camera.
Film: Agfapan 100 and Ilford XP2 120 roll film, with yellow filter.
